In a bid to curb the spread of the
deadly Ebola Virus Disease, the Sierra Leonean Government is considering a
total shutdown of the country before the end of the month.
Last month, the West African
country passed a law that stipulates a two-year jail term for anyone who hides
an Ebola patient in his house. This was done in a bid to discourage citizens
from trying to treat Ebola patients by themselves.
According to a government official
who was quoted by AFP on Saturday; the measure, which will come into force from
September 19, means pedestrians and vehicles on non-essential business will be
barred from movement for 72 hours.
“This will be strictly adhered to
without exception,” government spokesman Abdulai Bayratay told AFP by
telephone.
Ebola has already taken the lives
of more than 1,552 people in West Africa as well as other places.
