A security outfit tagged ‘The operatives of Peace on Campus
Initiative’ have nabbed a diploma student of the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom
State, Mr. Kufre Anwana, after two Improvised Explosive Devices were uncovered
in the institution male hostel.
The Punch learnt that the two IEDs, widely speculated to be
hand grenades, were found in a bag that belonged to the suspect by some
students, who alerted the operatives of the PCI.
The National Coordinator of the group, Mr. Oliver Cromwell,
said in Uyo on Monday that his men in the UNIUYO chapter got information about
the suspect keeping the explosive devices.
He added that some members trailed him to his male hostel
room in the university.
Cromwell explained that the explosives were packaged in a bag
in the hostel’s room.
He said the suspect was apprehended while the anti-bomb squad
of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command, Ikot AkpanAbia, Uyo, was invited to the
scene.
He stated that the squad defused the two improved explosive
devices as well as conducted a search round the other hostel rooms.
An eyewitness and student of the institution, Mr. Emma
Inyang, said the Anti-Bomb squad was called in to forestall any any tragedy
should the devices turn out to be bombs.
“Anti-Bomb Squad was invited to come and ascertain if the
explosives were real. They confirmed that those things were hand grenades and
were locally made,” he said.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Akwa Ibom State Command,
Mr. Etim Dickson, confirmed the incident.
He stated that the explosives were homemade devices, which
could have been invented by any of the science students in the university.
