Islamic sect, Boko Haram has renamed captured Adamawa town
as Madinatul Islam, which is translated in English as city of Islam.
Mubi was captured recently by the terrorist group who have
killed thousands of people in Northern Nigeria since 2012.
During a telephone conversation with journalists, Aliyu
Bala, a resident, who could not leave Mubi at the time of the invasion of the
town by the insurgents, said the sect has taken complete control of the town.
“They mounted check points and surveillance at strategic
locations, brandishing riffles but asking us not to panic or run away,” Mr.
Bala said.
Sunday Wugira, a Yola-based legal practitioner who went to
Maiha town to pick up his aged parents that fled Mubi when it was captured
said, despite the assurance by the insurgents several trapped residents are
still fleeing, including soldiers.
“I was in Maiha few hours ago,” he said “The pathetic plight
of the people I saw was simply beyond imagination. We were in a commercial bus
when some fleeing soldiers said we must adjust for them to get space in the bus
to flee, which we objected to. It’s unfortunate that even soldiers joined
civilians to run away.”
