Riot Broke Out In Kirikiri Maximum Prison

The Sun reports that a rampage took place at the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison, Lagos, Nigeria Thursday, as some inmates who started the riot allegedly escaped before they could be caught.

The paper reports that visitors have been prevented from visiting, with heavily armed security men manning the gates and carrying out thorough checks on vehicles coming out of the premises.

Shop owners and passersby interviewed by the paper, also confirmed the incident.

“ This is not the route that the inmates  take when they are escaping because of the  heavy security presence around the area leading to the prison. You also have a police station facing the prison directly, and this is why you hardly see them passing through the main gates. Escapee inmates go through the bush behind the prison, I guess that is where the search team should concentrate their efforts..”

The riot was blamed on what some inmates termed as ‘highhandedness on the part of the new Deputy Controller at the Maximum Security Prison, DCP Kayode Odeyemi,’ reports the Sun.
