“Save My Country;” President Sirleaf Cries Out As Ebola Takes Its Toll On Liberia

Liberia’s President, Johnson Sirleaf has made a passionate appeal to the international community to come to the rescue of the West African Country, heavily ravaged by the deadly Ebola Virus Disease.

Sirleaf made the appeal in an open letter read on the BBC World Service.

Ebola-United States Records First Case Of The EVD

The United States of America has recorded its first case of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease, which still doesn’t have a cure, and has a high mortality rate close to about 90%.

According to the Centre for Disease Control, CDC, the first case of the disease America was placed in "strict isolation" at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas earlier today, reports Reuters.

Ebola-Senegal Joins Nigeria As African Countries That Have Successfully Contained Ebola Virus

The World Health Organization’s regional office for Africa has declared that both Senegal and Nigeria have both successfully contained the deadly Ebola Virus Disease.

Recall that the virus was imported into Nigeria on July 20 2014 by a Liberian called Patrick Sawyer, who was an ECOWAS diplomat while that of Senegal was first recorded on August 29 2014.

“On the whole, the outbreaks in Senegal and Nigeria are pretty much contained,” the global health body said.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization said there have been 5,833 cases reported in West Africa with 2,833 deaths so far.

Ebola Claims The Life Of Another Doctor In Sierra Leone

A fourth doctor, Dr Olivet Buck has died of Ebola in Sierra Leone after a failed bid to transfer her abroad for treatment. The doctor passed away last night after the World Health Organization, WHO said it couldn’t help to move her to Germany.

Sierra Leone had requested funds from the organisation to transfer her for treatment saying it could not afford to lose another doctor.

However, Chief Medical Officer Dr Brima Kargbo confirmed today September 14 that the Sierra Leone national had died on Saturday night. WHO had said it could not meet the request but instead would work to give Dr Buck 'the best care possible' in Sierra Leone, including access to experimental drugs.

Ebola-Black Market In Blood Serum Emerge

A new trend has emerged in Ebola ravaged West Africa as Bloomberg reports that a black market for treatment of the virus derived from the blood survivors. This is according to the World Health Organization, which earlier gave indication that this could be possible.

The WHO will work with governments to wipe out the illicit trade in convalescent serum, according to the Director-General Margaret Chan who spoke to reporters in Geneva today. However, there is a danger that such serums could contain other infections and wouldn’t be administered properly, Chan said.
